making the most of your family session

It's hard to believe that Christmas/Holiday Card season is upon us. That means photographers everywhere are gearing up for the busiest 3 months of their year - and it also means that families everywhere are preparing for their session. Here are 4 tips to make the most of your upcoming family session.

1. Plan ahead - This might surprise some people, but most photographers are fully booked for their fall appointments by the end of July. If you have a favorite photographer, be sure to schedule your session over the summer for your fall pictures. It's good to know that most holiday card sessions are done in September and October, so keep that in mind as you are scheduling.

2. Start Shopping - Outfits matter! It's great to coordinate but don't be too "matchy matchy" - trust me! Keep in mind the beautiful fall colors that will be coming through in your images - lots of yellows, golds, oranges and greens will be abundant. For fall pictures I love using blues, whites, greys, browns, with pops of color in accessories. Seriously - ADD color! It makes such a difference. One other piece of advice I would make when shopping - you don't need to dress in Christmas colors (of course you can if you feel the need) but I like to remind people these images will likely live in your home for the months beyond December/January so keep that in mind. Outfit inspiration below - and always ask your photographer for tips! We are happy to help.

3. Location, Location, Location - It likely comes as no surprise but your location makes all the difference. If you want gorgeous fall foliage in the background, make sure you communicate this to your photographer! I have several go-to spots for capturing amazing fall images all around the Chicago area. It's so important you communicate all your expectations so you have amazing images that you will cherish for years to come.

4. HAVE FUN! - Trust me on this one - you will love your images so much more if you relax and have a blast with your photographer. Posed images are great - but those candid, natural moments are the one that you'll hang above your fireplace for years to come. Don't be afraid to get a little silly, bring the family pet, incorporate traditions and games you like to play together - just be yourselves! The love, warmth and caring will shine through in your images and make your Holiday card front and center on all your friends mantles!
